Plant-based diets have been gaining popularity for the treatment of a wide range of lifestyle-related acute and chronic diseases. This kind of eating regimen is not only preventive but also helps in reversing majority of existing medical conditions. Based on currently available literature, plant-based diets typically reduce the risk of developing numerous chronic diseases over the lifespan, compared to meat-containing diets. Evidence indicates that those following plant‐based dietary regimes have a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, Kidney disease, obesity, and all forms of cancer. and mortality rates.
Vegetables and fruits are an important part of a healthy diet. No single fruit or vegetable provides all of the nutrients you need to be healthy. Hence variety is as important as quantity. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reverse diabetes, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, eliminate digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite in check. Those following plant‐based diet also witness reductions in inflammatory and endothelial markers. Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with increased lifespan and a lower risk of mortality from all causes. From a nutritional perspective, plant‐based diets have abundance of fibre, phytochemicals and antioxidants. These qualities may be at the core of the health benefits reported in comparison to animal foods.
The typical whole food plant based diet recommends against consuming any animal-based products and it excludes added sugars, salt, fat, packaged and processed (junk) foods. All kinds of animal proteins like meat, egg, fish, and dairy are eliminated or rarely consumed. By reducing or altogether eliminating animal protein sources and focusing on vegetarian sources of protein such as beans, nuts and seeds, we can not only reverse majority of lifestyle illnesses but can also prevent them from occurring. Great emphasis is laid on eating complex carbohydrates and avoiding simple carbohydrates. A whole-food, plant-based diet is the primary option for minimising risk of disease, achieving and maintaining optimum weight, supporting longer health span, and possibly even extending life span.
The China Study is the Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition ever conducted, on the relationship between nutrition and disease. It was conducted by Dr. T. Colin Campbell and his collaborators from Oxford University and the Chinese government. The scope of the research and the duration (over 30 years) is unprecedented. The authors studied 6,500 adults from various counties in China, analysing their diet and health and reaching stunning conclusions about the direct relationship between nutrients and several diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, heart failure, and other lethal ailments plaguing the Western world. The conclusion of that exhaustive study is that a plant-based diet is the healthiest way to eat. Plants provide all the nutrients the human body needs to function properly and to fend off disease. Meat, milk, and other dairy products have been linked to liver cancer in many of the Chinese subjects of the study.
The China Study demonstrated that most disease processes that afflict our society can be slowed down, reversed or avoided entirely, merely by implementing nutritional changes. By eliminating animal-based protein and turning to plants as the primary source of food, health and wellness can be dramatically improved and many frightening diseases avoided altogether. The China Study concluded, “People who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic diseases. Even relatively small intakes of animal-based foods was associated with adverse effects, while those who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic diseases. Through his analysis, Colin Campbell has also shown that animal proteins are acidic, creating an ideal environment in which cancer cells can thrive. Plant proteins are alkaline, making it almost impossible for cancer cells to take root and prosper. His recommendation: The more you substitute plant foods for animal foods the healthier you are likely to be.
Diet has important physiological implications. Plant diets provide higher amounts of specific vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and much more as compared to animal foods. Ideally 50% of your food consumption should be raw. It is undeniable that what we choose to eat affects not only our health and well-being, but also reduces or eliminates the need for medications. By eating a plant-based diet, we can impact a lot of different risk factors at the same time. That’s the beauty of diet over medication.
